Triumphant Return of Tarique Rahman: Reigniting Democracy in New Bangladesh
For the past 15 years, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has faced relentless repression, severely undermining its political standing in the nation. Originally a ruling party, the BNP has been subjected to continuous persecution under the regime of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Her administration justified these actions on the grounds of combating terrorism. Reports estimate that around 1,000 BNP members have been killed and approximately 5 million arrested, as law enforcement agencies were effectively weaponized to dismantle the party’s influence.
The BNP and its leadership have suffered from widespread torture, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings. Tarique Rahman, the party’s acting chairperson, has been living in exile, separated from his mother, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Rahman faces the constant threat of arrest or assassination if he returns to Dhaka. This climate of fear and repression has deeply affected the BNP’s ability to function as a legitimate political entity within Bangladesh.
