AGP’s Ambitious Strategy for BTR Polls: Collaboration with UPPL?
Assam Cabinet Minister and senior leader of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Atul Bora, emphasized the critical nature of this year for the party as it prepares for upcoming autonomous council elections, particularly the important Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) polls. After a central committee meeting of the AGP on Sunday, Bora addressed the media, stating, “Following the recently concluded panchayat elections, we held an extensive discussion with the central leadership today. This year holds immense significance for us.”
Bora highlighted the AGP’s notable success in the recent panchayat elections, where the party won 27 Zila Parishads and 187 Anchalik Parishads. He stressed the need for the AGP to fortify its organizational strength moving forward. In a noteworthy development, he mentioned that the AGP has successfully gained support from religious minority voters, allowing the party to gain control of various constituencies that have traditionally been Congress strongholds. “We have made significant inroads into areas once dominated by the Congress,” he remarked.
Regarding the upcoming BTR elections, Bora clarified that while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) plans to run independently, the AGP will discuss its strategy with its ally, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL). “We will certainly contest the BTR elections. Discussions with UPPL will be initiated to finalize our strategy,” he confirmed. In a critical comment about the Congress party, Bora stated, “Congress is declining from zero to absolute zero. The people have now seen the difference real development can make under the current leadership.”
