Tourist Footfall in Mizoram Soars 114%: Over 4.69 Lakh Visitors in FY 2024–25!
In a significant uplift for Mizoram’s tourism sector, the state has recorded over a two-fold increase in tourist arrivals during the financial year 2024–2025 compared to the previous fiscal year, according to data from the Mizoram Tourism Department. Official figures reveal that a total of 469,753 tourists visited the scenic hill state until February this fiscal, marking an impressive 114.29% increase from the 219,114 arrivals noted in 2023–2024. Among these visitors, 464,742 were domestic tourists, while 5,011 international guests came from more than 80 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, China, Japan, and Germany.
While data for March 2025 has yet to be compiled, tourism officials are optimistic that the final numbers will further strengthen this remarkable upward trend. In comparison, the previous year saw 222,226 tourists, consisting of 218,675 domestic visitors and 3,551 international travelers. The COVID-19 pandemic had severely impacted tourism in Mizoram, with total visitors plummeting to just 20,564 in 2020–21 and 132,000 in 2021–22.
For the ongoing fiscal year, Aizawl district has attracted the most visitors, welcoming 262,224 domestic and 4,097 foreign tourists, followed by Kolasib district, which saw 105,593 visitors, including 25 international guests. Officials indicated that many tourists came for business purposes, while others sought exploration, family visits, and various other motivations.
The increasing allure of Mizoram can be attributed to its Responsible Tourism Policy, introduced in August 2020, which promotes sustainable development, strengthens institutional frameworks, fosters skill development, and aims to eradicate poverty through tourism-led livelihoods. This policy seeks to position tourism as a pivotal driver for community development while ensuring adherence to environmental, economic, and social responsibilities.
In terms of financial output, the tourism department generated ₹3.27 crore in FY 2024–25, a slight decrease from ₹3.57 crore in the preceding year. Currently, the state features 197 identified tourist destinations along with 78 tourist lodges or facilities, of which 39 are operated by the department, while the remainder is managed by private operators. Additionally, the tourism ecosystem in Mizoram has grown to encompass 101 registered hotels, 125 homestays, 76 tour operators, 95 tour guides, and 31 catering units.
