New Cricket Stadium and Bridge Set to Open by February in Guwahati
Guwahati: The construction of a new cricket stadium and swimming pool in Amingaon, North Guwahati, along with a third bridge connecting the northern and southern banks of the Brahmaputra River, is expected to be completed by February next year. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made this announcement during his visit to North Guwahati on Saturday.
The new cricket stadium, which will be a modern facility with a seating capacity of 20,000, is set to complement the Sarusajai Sports Complex and the Barsapara Cricket Stadium. CM Sarma indicated that the stadium is designed to host One Day Internationals, T20 matches, and other high-standard sporting events, comparable to existing venues in Guwahati. He noted that critical infrastructure, including alternative access routes and parking facilities, will be developed in phases to enhance the site’s usability for public events and international shows.
Sarma also mentioned plans to redevelop the Nehru Stadium located in the city’s heart into a comprehensive sports facility aimed at both national and international competitions. Additionally, he revealed intentions for a new stadium in Chandrapur, Guwahati, to further bolster sports infrastructure in the region. Regarding the swimming pool in Amingaon, he expressed optimism about meeting the construction timeline.
On the subject of the new Brahmaputra bridge, the Chief Minister stated that it is in the final stages of construction and is targeted for completion and opening by December. During his visit, Sarma attended a training session at the National Center of Excellence for Badminton, part of the Badminton Association of India, where he engaged with coaches and officials.
The state government is committed to enhancing sports infrastructure and athlete support through the establishment of modern training facilities. This initiative aims to position Assam as a prominent host for national and international sporting events. Officials emphasized that efforts are underway to create an environment conducive to sporting excellence for athletes across both urban and rural areas. The ongoing constructions of the cricket stadium and swimming pool at Amingaon are pivotal to these efforts.
