Heartfelt Farewell: Former West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Passes Away at 80, Leaving a Legacy
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal and a key figure in the Communist Party of India (Marxist), passed away on the morning of Thursday, August 8, in Kolkata. His death came after a prolonged battle with illness, as confirmed by his son, Suchetan Bhattacharjee, according to Ananda Bazar.
At the age of 80, Bhattacharjee’s political career was marked by his leadership as the second and final CPM Chief Minister during the 34-year rule of the Left Front in Bengal. He held office from 2000 to 2011, a tenure that witnessed significant political and social changes in the state. His 11-year administration was pivotal in shaping the contemporary political landscape of West Bengal.
Bhattacharjee was admitted to a private hospital in Alipore, Kolkata, on July 29, 2023, suffering from multiple health issues, including pneumonia. Initially, he showed signs of recovery and was discharged on August 9 after being placed on ventilation. However, his condition worsened soon after, leading to his demise.
Bhattacharjee is remembered for his influential role in West Bengal’s politics and his contributions to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) during a critical period in the state’s history. His passing marks the end of an era for many who witnessed the transformation of Bengal under his leadership.
