Devastating Cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh Claims 45 Lives; NDRF Mobilized for Urgent Rescue Operations
A catastrophic cloudburst near the Samej and Bagi bridges late Wednesday night claimed 45 lives in the Shrikhand region of Himachal Pradesh, igniting a large-scale rescue operation. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are relentlessly working in the affected areas to mitigate the disaster’s impact.
Baljinder Singh, Commandant of the 14th Battalion of the NDRF, affirmed the readiness of the teams dispatched to Himachal Pradesh this year, emphasizing a rapid response to emergencies. “The Samej cloudburst is a significant disaster, and our teams were strategically positioned in remote locations to ensure timely rescue operations,” Singh stated.
By Thursday morning, 13 bodies had been recovered from the disaster site. Singh reported, “We have recovered 13 dead bodies so far, with four found earlier and nine more discovered recently. Ten individuals were missing, and one person remains unaccounted for. We are committed to ensuring thorough rescue efforts.”
An earlier report from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) highlighted substantial rainfall across the state, with Joginder Nagar in the Mandi district recording a peak of 110 mm in 24 hours. Kuldeep Srivastava, head of IMD Himachal Pradesh, mentioned that regions had been alerted about the heavy rainfall conditions. “Joginder Nagar experienced the highest rainfall at 110 mm. While other parts of the state saw moderate rainfall, approximately 75 percent of areas received between 30 mm to 50 mm in the past 24 hours,” Srivastava explained.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for the lower Himalayan districts, including Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Chamba, and Mandi. Residents in these areas are advised to stay vigilant amidst ongoing severe weather conditions.
