R&B singer Cassie revealed that Sean “Diddy” Combs’ infidelity was a painful aspect of their turbulent, nearly 11-year relationship. This statement came as Combs’ defense team began cross-examining the prosecution’s key witness on Thursday during his sex trafficking trial. Cassie, now 38, has been on the stand for three days after enduring two days of questioning by prosecutors in a Manhattan courtroom. During her testimony, she claimed that Combs raped her in 2018 when she ended their relationship, after he had entangled her in a cycle of physical abuse by threatening to leak degrading sexual videos.
Prosecutors allege that Combs exploited his powerful position as a music mogul to force Cassie and other women into participating in sexual encounters. He faces multiple charges, including racketeering and sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, as several other accusers are expected to testify. Combs has denied all allegations and pleaded not guilty. His lawyers have acknowledged that while he could exhibit violent behavior, the sexual encounters he participated in were consensual and did not constitute a criminal act.
Defense attorney Anna Estevao employed a notably gentle tone during her questioning, a departure from the typical approach aimed at unsettling witnesses. Estevao stated, “You and Sean Combs were in love for 11 years. You loved him and believed that he loved you as well,” which Cassie affirmed. Estevao explained that Cassie’s feelings were the reason it was so painful for her when Combs lied and cheated.
As the cross-examination began, Combs appeared relaxed, sitting back in his chair with his legs crossed while conferring with his attorney, Marc Agnifilo. Estevao introduced early messages exchanged between Combs and Cassie, highlighting their earlier affection. For example, Cassie wrote in April 2010, “Going to sleep now so it can be tomorrow faster and you can be home. Love you!!!” to which Combs responded, “Love my baby.” This testimony stood in stark contrast to the violent and “disgusting” sexual acts Cassie described in the initial days of her testimony.
On Thursday, the judge denied a request from the defense to present text messages from Combs and Cassie that referenced specific sexual acts. Defense attorneys indicated that they expect the cross-examination to conclude by the end of Friday’s court session.
Cassie has remained strong throughout her two days of direct questioning, though she has shed tears on several occasions. For the most part, she has been composed and straightforward, discussing sensitive topics in front of a courtroom filled with Combs’ family, friends, journalists, and supporters of Cassie.
