United Against Unfairness: Indian Universities Stand Strong, Suspend MoUs with Turkish Institutes Amid Rising Boycott Turkey Calls

In response to Turkey’s open support for Pakistan amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, several Indian universities are severing ties with Turkish institutions. The Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) has recently announced the immediate cancellation of its academic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Turkey’s Yunus Emre Institute, joining Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in this diplomatic protest.

MANUU’s decision was officially articulated as a stance against what the university described as Turkey’s backing of Pakistan’s alleged terrorist activities, particularly in light of the ongoing Indo-Pak conflict. The university highlighted that the MoU, which had facilitated a Turkish language diploma for several years, is now null and void, emphasizing their commitment to national security.

Earlier on the same day, JMI also declared the termination of its MoU with Turkish entities, asserting the need for immediate action due to national security implications. JNU took similar measures on May 14, citing security considerations as a primary factor in cutting academic ties with Turkey’s Inonu University.

Though MANUU is based in Hyderabad and both JNU and JMI are located in Delhi, their collective actions reflect a unified response to Turkey’s diplomatic stance. JNU asserted in a post on X, “Due to National Security considerations, the MoU between JNU and Inonu University, Türkiye stands suspended until further notice. JNU stands with the Nation. #NationFirst.”

Turkey’s overt assistance to Pakistan has ignited backlash in India, now posing a threat to the long-standing trade and investment relationship between the two countries. As tensions escalate, there are concerns regarding the economic repercussions for Turkey, which is already grappling with economic instability.

Data from travel agencies such as MakeMyTrip reveals significant shifts in traveler sentiment, with bookings for destinations like Turkey and Azerbaijan declining by 60% and cancellations increasing by an alarming 250% within the past week. This trend underscores the broader public reaction against Turkey amid increasing geopolitical tensions.

As academic and cultural ties between India and Turkey dwindle, the implications of these actions reverberate beyond mere institutional agreements. This diplomatic rift adds a layer of complexity to the already strained relations between India and Pakistan, affecting not only bilateral trade and tourism but also the foundational narrative of diplomatic interactions in the region.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how these shifts will influence not only educational collaborations but also the broader geopolitical landscape involving India, Pakistan, and Turkey. The voices from the academic sector are making it clear that national security will govern their associations moving forward.
