Tripura Sees Significant Birth Increase in 2021: Key Statistics Revealed

Agartala, May 13: Tripura has made significant strides in the registration of essential life events, particularly births and deaths, according to the 2021 Civil Registration System (CRS) Report released by the Office of the Registrar General of India. The report underscores positive trends in the state’s civil registration coverage, enhancing governance and demographic planning. In 2021, Tripura registered 57,689 births, which marks a 14.5% increase from 50,398 in 2020. This growth in registration reflects improved outreach efforts by state authorities, the digitization of services, and heightened public awareness about the importance of timely registrations. The birth rate for the state is recorded at 13.4 per 1,000 population, slightly down from the previous year’s 14.0.

Among the registered births, there were 30,591 male and 27,098 female births, resulting in a sex ratio at birth of 885 females for every 1,000 males, which remains below the national average of 907. This persistent imbalance raises concerns and points to the necessity for enhanced awareness campaigns and gender-sensitivity programs.

The report also indicates that Tripura recorded 20,118 deaths in 2021, up from 17,198 in 2020, reflecting a significant 17% increase. The death rate rose marginally to 4.7 per 1,000 population from 4.3 in the preceding year. Among the deaths reported, 12,636 were male and 7,482 were female, leading to a sex ratio of 592 female deaths for every 1,000 male deaths, revealing disparities in mortality data and potential inequalities in healthcare access.

Notably, the completeness of birth registration in Tripura has achieved 100%, while death registration completeness stands at 96.1%, both surpassing national averages of 92.0% and 98.2%, respectively. These figures highlight the effectiveness of Tripura’s civil registration system, bolstered by the collaboration between local authorities and the Directorate of Economics and Statistics.

Officials attribute this success to efficient awareness campaigns, simplified registration processes at the village level, and the integration of registration units with healthcare institutions. “We’ve worked tirelessly to ensure that no birth or death goes unrecorded. Our digital systems and local outreach programs have been key,” stated a senior official from Tripura’s Health and Family Welfare Department.

The increase in registered deaths can also be partly attributed to enhanced surveillance and awareness during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the significance of reporting deaths became crucial for health statistics and benefits.

As Tripura develops its civil registration infrastructure, experts emphasize the need to improve gender balance in registrations and to narrow the gap between reported and estimated vital events. Such initiatives position the state as a potential national model for demographic transparency and planning.
