The Box Office Buzz: Bloodlines & More

Darling cinephiles, the Warner Bros wave continues to crash over the box office this weekend with the much-anticipated New Line release of Final Destination: Bloodlines. Marking the franchise’s first sequel in 14 long years, this cinematic treat is set to charm audiences with a projection of a record-breaking $35 to $40 million across 3,400 locations. The global outlook? A tantalizing $70 million, as it will roll out alongside its U.S.-Canada debut in a whopping 74 territories.

This R-rated gem, helmed by the dynamic duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, is particularly resonating with young women under 25, who are choosing this spine-tingling ride as their first pick. Following closely behind are the guys under 25, eager for thrills. To put it in perspective, the best opening in the Final Destination legacy belongs to 2009’s The Final Destination, which raked in a cool $27.4 million over its three-day debut. With five films under its belt, the franchise has racked up a jaw-dropping $666 million globally.

For those not in the know, the original flick was penned by Jeffrey Reddick, initially imagined as a chilling episode for The X-Files. It revolves around a group of characters who narrowly evade death after one receives a premonition of doom, only to find themselves claimed by the most bizarre, albeit gruesome, fates. Bloodlines pivots around a college student struggling with violent nightmares, returning home to enlist the help of a key figure to break the deadly cycle. Early buzz from Rotten Tomatoes reveals a stellar 93% certified fresh rating—an encouraging sign! The previews will kick off at 3:30 p.m.

But wait, there’s more! As Bloodlines overtakes 3,400 screens, its sibling Sinners, featuring the dashing Michael B. Jordan and helmed by Ryan Coogler, is poised to wrap up its fifth weekend with an expected $15.4 million, bringing its domestic total to around $270 million.

Not to be outdone, Disney’s Thunderbolts lands on its third weekend, projected to dip around 40% with an estimated $19 million.

And in the realm of multiplatform endeavors, The Weeknd’s Hurry Up Tomorrow, a tantalizing project alongside Jenna Ortega, launches on Friday as he kicks off his sold-out tour. This $15 million independent film could open in the low single digits despite fan screenings amassing a tidy $1 million. Lionsgate has hopped on board, but the buzz is muted. Can this star-studded venture beat the odds? Only time will tell, but one must admit, darlings, it’s shaping up to be an exhilarating cinematic weekend!
