Scientists Uncover 26 New Bacterial Species in NASA Cleanrooms!

An international team of researchers from India, Saudi Arabia, and the United States has uncovered 26 new bacterial species thriving in NASA’s cleanrooms—highly sterile environments meant to prevent contamination of spacecraft heading into space. Their findings, published in the journal Microbiome, highlight the remarkable resilience of certain microorganisms in surviving and adapting to extreme, controlled conditions, raising vital questions about microbial survival and the risks of biological contamination in space exploration.

Cleanrooms, where spacecraft assembly occurs, employ rigorous measures to control air quality, temperature, and humidity, thereby minimizing microbial presence. Despite these stringent conditions, researchers discovered that some extremophilic bacteria not only survived but thrived, potentially possessing traits that help them endure the harsh realities of outer space. “Our goal was to assess the risk of extremophiles hitching a ride on spacecraft and possibly surviving in space or on other planets,” explained Professor Alexandre Rosado of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia, the study’s lead author. He emphasized the critical nature of this research for planetary protection and preventing the accidental colonization of other celestial bodies.

The study involved a genomic analysis of bacteria gathered during NASA’s Phoenix Mars mission, which launched in 2007. Researchers sequenced the genomes of 215 isolates and identified 53 distinct strains representing 26 novel bacterial species. Many of these bacteria exhibited genes tied to high resistance to radiation and disinfectants, alongside advanced DNA repair mechanisms, metabolic adaptability, and detoxification capabilities—traits that could enhance their long-term survival in conditions similar to those found in space.

Dr. Junia Schultz, a postdoctoral researcher at KAUST and co-author of the study, remarked, “These newly discovered genes may have applications far beyond space. Their resilience mechanisms could be harnessed for innovations in food preservation, medical biotechnology, and even industrial processes.” This discovery contributes to a growing interest in understanding how microorganisms from Earth might behave in extraterrestrial environments and how their unique biological traits could one day support human space missions or advance biotechnology on our planet.
