F&CC Unveils Rs 200-Crore Strategy to Avert Mohali Monsoon Flooding

In a significant effort to safeguard flood-prone areas of Mohali—specifically Phase 3B2, Phase 4, Phase 5, Sector 70-71, Phase 7, and Phase 11—from monsoon rainwater damage, the Mohali Municipal Corporation has initiated a Rs 200-crore project. This ambitious plan aims to create a permanent drainage system that channels rainwater into the Patiala Ki Rao choe, bolstered by a comprehensive survey and a robust drainage model.

Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu informed The Indian Express that the Municipal Corporation lacks necessary funds. He has sent a letter to the government seeking financial aid, stating, “As soon as funds are received, the project will be launched to provide lasting relief from monsoon-related losses.”

During a Finance and Contract Committee meeting held recently, estimates of Rs 12 crore for new initiatives were approved, alongside work orders totaling Rs 13 crore for essential civic projects, including sewerage, footpaths, and roads.

Present at the meeting were Senior Deputy Mayor Amrik Singh Somal, Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi, committee members Jasvir Singh Manku and Anuradha Anand, Chief Engineer Naresh Batta, and other senior officials. The mayor highlighted the city’s solution for effective rainwater drainage, explaining that Mohali has been divided into four zones for the desilting of blocked drainage pipes. The tendering process is currently underway, with large-scale cleaning to commence shortly.

Additionally, in collaboration with the Soil Conservation Department, the tall reed grass along the seasonal N-choe stream in Mohali will be cleared starting next week. Regarding urban mobility, the mayor shared that Mohali’s inaugural cycle track has been a success. “Our goal is to connect all residential areas to markets via dedicated cycle paths, alleviating parking issues while promoting healthier lifestyles,” he noted.

Sidhu emphasized the importance of transparency and equity in development efforts, asserting, “Work is progressing in every ward according to need—without discrimination.” He has directed officials to uphold high-quality standards while regularly monitoring ongoing projects. “Any negligence will lead to strict repercussions for involved contractors and officials,” he cautioned.
