Operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport remained stable on Sunday, despite disruptions in flight schedules due to evolving airspace dynamics. A total of 97 flights, including one international, were canceled as northern airports faced temporary closures amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The Delhi airport administration communicated on X that, while operations were smooth, passengers might experience some delays in flight schedules and security checkpoint processing times due to increased security measures.
Travelers were urged to stay informed through updates from their airlines, adhere to baggage regulations, allow additional time for security checks, and cooperate with airline and security staff to ensure smooth operations. Passengers were also advised to verify the latest flight statuses through their airline or the official Delhi Airport website.
The precautionary measures were put in place following a spike in hostilities between India and Pakistan, including drone and missile attacks. In response, Indian aviation authorities temporarily closed 32 airports across northern and western regions, including significant locations like Srinagar, Jammu, and Amritsar. Despite an understanding reached on Saturday to halt aggressive actions on land, air, and sea, affected airports remained closed until May 15, with no immediate plans for reopening.
In light of the ongoing conflict, security protocols have been elevated across all functioning airports. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) mandated enhanced security measures, including secondary pre-boarding checks for all passengers, a prohibition on visitor entry at airport terminals, and the appropriate deployment of air marshals to address heightened threat levels. These stringent security measures will remain effective at least until May 18.
