Assam Panchayat Elections: Secure Counting Starts for 21,000+ Seats
Counting of votes for the Assam panchayat elections commenced under tight security on the morning of May 11. This election marked the first time the state conducted polling in two phases—on May 2 and May 7—following the recent delimitation of constituencies across its 27 districts. A senior official from the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) reported that the counting of ballot papers began promptly at 8 am, with counting agents arriving early to oversee the process.
In light of incidents of violence and disturbances during the voting, the administration implemented stringent security measures at all counting centers. The official emphasized the vast number of seats involved, stating, “There are thousands of seats in the election. We will try to complete the counting as soon as possible. However, we believe that it is likely to stretch until tomorrow.”
A significant total of 21,920 Gram Panchayat (GP) seats were contested, with 10,883 of these reserved for women. Additionally, elections were held for 2,192 Anchalik Parishad (AP) seats, among which 1,124 were reserved for women, and for 397 Zilla Parishad seats, with 199 set aside for female candidates. Among these contests, 1,289 seats were resolved uncontested—comprising 21 ZP seats, 151 AP seats, and 1,117 GP seats.
In total, approximately 1.80 crore individuals were eligible to cast their votes in this election, yielding a voter turnout of 74.71 percent.
