Guwahati: In a significant tribute to the legendary musician Bhupen Hazarika, the Assam Cabinet has officially approved the renaming of Dibrugarh Airport in honor of the cultural icon. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made the announcement on Saturday, revealing that a special assembly session will be convened to pass a resolution for the consideration of the Union government.
In addition to this honor, the cabinet has also endorsed the Assam Tea Workers’ Financial Assistance Scheme, 2025, which will provide a one-time grant of ₹5,000 to around seven lakh tea garden workers as the industry commemorates its 200th anniversary. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to supporting those who have contributed to Assam’s rich tea heritage.
Moreover, other notable decisions taken during the meeting include the approval of the Assam Electronics Components Manufacturing Top-Up Scheme, 2025. This scheme will offer a 60 percent top-up on central government incentives, aimed at boosting local manufacturing capabilities. There was also a reduction in registration fees for cooperative societies, now set at 0.5 percent, reflecting a push for fostering cooperative development.
Additionally, the cabinet has rolled out the ‘Jibon Prerna Scheme’ for graduates and research scholars, scheduled for implementation from October 2025. This initiative is designed to provide monthly stipends to eligible graduates and one-time financial support to research scholars, promoting educational advancement and innovation in the state.
The cabinet also approved a 50 percent house rent allowance for specific categories of workers, demonstrating an effort to enhance the welfare of employees in various sectors. The extension of the ‘Apun Ghar’ and ‘Apun Vahan’ schemes to both regular and contractual employees of state entities further exemplifies the government’s commitment to worker welfare and support.
Lastly, the Assam Pumped Storage Power Generation Promotion Policy, 2025, was greenlit, positioning Assam as a potential hub for pumped hydro storage, thereby enhancing the state’s energy infrastructure and sustainability efforts.
Through these decisions, the Assam Cabinet has taken significant steps towards cultural recognition, worker support, and economic development, setting a progressive agenda for the state’s future.
