Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced new measures on Saturday, May 10, aimed at reducing government spending due to the prevailing economic situation in the country. In a media address, Sarma indicated that the government will temporarily curtail expenditures related to seminars, events, and foreign travel. “Given the current circumstances, we have opted to cut down on expenses for organizing seminars and events until conditions improve. There will be no international travel for Ministers or officials at government expense during this time,” Sarma stated.

He also noted that the government will halt purchases of new vehicles, with the exception of those needed for police and security forces, and that large-scale meetings will be minimized. “We will endeavor to conduct meetings virtually whenever possible,” he added.

In another noteworthy declaration, the Chief Minister revealed plans to rename Dibrugarh airport in honor of the revered cultural figure and Bharat Ratna awardee, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. “The Assam government has decided to dedicate Dibrugarh Airport to Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. A special session of the Assam Legislative Assembly will be convened next month to formally ratify this cabinet decision,” Sarma explained.

Moreover, the Assam cabinet approved a welfare program aimed at benefiting tea garden workers as part of the bicentenary celebration of Assam tea. “Today, the cabinet approved a scheme titled ‘Eti Koli Duti Paat.’ Under this initiative, the state government will provide a one-time assistance of ₹5,000 to every permanent and temporary worker in Assam’s tea gardens,” Sarma announced.

These actions highlight the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility while continuing its welfare initiatives and honoring the cultural heritage of the state.

Meanwhile, Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, the sole international airport in the Northeast, is fully operational with heightened security measures. Authorities have urged travelers to comply with all security checks and to arrive at the airport well in advance, as they may face longer waiting times due to the enhanced protocols.

“The airport is operational. Passengers might experience extended wait times owing to increased security procedures. We recommend planning ahead and staying updated with your airlines for further details,” the airport management, under the Adani Group, stated.

Additionally, a list of guidelines was issued for travelers, advising them to arrive with ample time, allow sufficient time for security checks, and cooperate with security and airport personnel.
