Indian Air Defense Aces: F-16 Fighter Shot Down in Thwarted Pakistan Attack on Jammu
India’s air defence systems effectively thwarted an aerial assault launched by Pakistan against Jammu on Thursday night. The operation involved multiple drones and missiles, all successfully neutralized, ensuring the safety of residents and preventing any substantial damage.
Reports confirmed that an F-16 fighter jet from the Pakistan Air Force was shot down by an Indian surface-to-air missile system. This aircraft, which had taken off from the strategic Sargodha air base in Pakistan, was intercepted in proximity to its launch site, as stated by sources.
The attempted attack prompted blackouts and triggered air raid sirens across regions including Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Authorities promptly issued emergency alerts, advising residents to stay indoors. Indian air defences managed to counteract several drones near Jammu airport, and eight missiles were intercepted before they could reach their intended targets.
As part of heightened security measures, power outages were noted at significant locations, including the revered Vaishno Devi shrine in the Reasi district and parts of Srinagar. This aggressive maneuver from Pakistan came just hours after a previously unsuccessful attempt to target 15 Indian cities.
Earlier that day, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh confirmed that major urban areas like Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and Bhuj were on the target list. However, India’s advanced counter-Unmanned Aerial System (C-UAS) grid, along with its air defence network, neutralized all incoming threats effectively.
Debris analysis of the projectiles clearly indicated Pakistani origins. In a rapid response, India executed precision strikes that destroyed several Pakistani air defence installations, notably a key site in Lahore. Simultaneously, Pakistan engaged in heavy shelling across border areas in Jammu & Kashmir, such as Kupwara, Uri, and Rajouri, resulting in unfortunate civilian casualties, including 16 individuals—five of whom were children and three women. The Indian Army retaliated firmly to this aggression.
These recent developments follow Operation Sindoor, during which Indian forces reportedly eliminated nearly 100 militants across nine terrorist camps situated in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
