Gautam Adani Strengthens Ties with Bhutan through Ambitious 5,000 MW Energy Project Agreement

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani announced on May 8 that the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower projects in Bhutan marks a significant enhancement of the group’s collaborative efforts with the Himalayan nation. In a message posted on X, Adani expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay for trusting the Adani Group, stating, “I was honored to deepen our partnership with Bhutan. We are committed to a greener and more prosperous future. Thank you PM Bhutan Tshering Tobgay for your trust and vision.”

Prime Minister Tobgay expressed his satisfaction over the ongoing efforts between Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) and Adani Power, particularly highlighting the progress on the Wangchhu hydropower joint venture. He noted the importance of the newly signed MoU, which solidifies plans to develop an additional 5,000 MW of hydropower in Bhutan. “I am grateful to my friend Gautam Adani,” Tobgay remarked, emphasizing the backing of both the Bhutanese and Indian governments for this partnership aimed at promoting clean energy and economic growth.

The MoU was signed in Bhutan by DGPC’s Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin and Naresh Telgu, COO of Adani Green Hydro Ltd, in the company of key ministers and dignitaries. This agreement expands on the existing 570/900 MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project, where DGPC maintains a 51 percent stake while the Adani Group holds 49 percent. The comprehensive 5,000 MW initiative will include further hydropower and pumped storage projects, with plans for detailed project reports followed by phased implementations.

Rinzin remarked, “This strategic partnership with Adani will further strengthen our strong engagement with the Government of India in leveraging Bhutan’s rich hydropower resources, a cornerstone of the exemplary relationship between our two nations.” He expressed optimism for future collaborations with Adani and knowledge sharing from their global successes.

Additionally, DGPC and Adani Group have initialed the Shareholders’ Agreement for the Wangchhu Project, signifying substantial advancements in their joint efforts to elevate Bhutan’s hydropower sector. The Adani Group, one of India’s top players in infrastructure and renewable energy, plans to leverage its extensive experience to boost Bhutan’s hydropower capacity and facilitate connectivity to Indian energy markets.

Through this collaboration, the Adani Group aims to ensure reliable power offtake and seamless integration with India’s commercial power markets, thereby enhancing Bhutan’s role in regional energy trade. This initiative is in line with Bhutan’s Renewable Energy Roadmap, which targets an additional 20,000 MW of generation capacity by 2040, promoting diversification into solar and geothermal energy while attracting investment and innovation through strategic partnerships.
