Stay Calm: Meghalaya Government Urges Against Panic Buying Amidst Price Hike Warnings
Guwahati: Amid growing tensions between India and Pakistan, the Meghalaya government has urged residents to refrain from panic buying essential goods. Officials reassured citizens that the state has ample food supplies and is not facing any immediate threat to food security.
In recent days, reports of Indian airstrikes targeting terror camps across the border have sparked fears of retaliation from Pakistan, leading to a surge in consumer purchasing throughout the state. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Comingone Ymbon addressed the media, appealing for calm and urging people not to succumb to panic.
“I appeal to everyone in the state not to panic,” said Ymbon. “We are closely monitoring the situation, and all districts have sufficient supplies, including buffer stocks.” He emphasized that any further escalation would prompt the government to reassess the situation and implement appropriate measures.
Despite the reassurances, many residents in Shillong and surrounding areas flocked to grocery stores, resulting in shelves being left half-empty by the evening. This buying frenzy mirrored behaviors observed during previous national crises; however, state officials maintained that the situation remains manageable.
In a firm message to traders, the government issued a warning against any attempts to inflate prices during this period. “I urge all shopkeepers not to take advantage of the situation,” emphasized Ymbon. He added, “Our department’s price vigilance committee is actively monitoring market dynamics through our dashboard.”
The minister reiterated that Meghalaya is well-equipped and currently not experiencing any supply shortages. Department officials confirmed that buffer stocks have been strategically distributed across various districts, with teams deployed to prevent hoarding and black-marketing.
While tensions persist on the broader geopolitical stage, the Meghalaya government is focused on ensuring stability and food security for its residents. Authorities continue to maintain a close watch on the evolving situation, aiming to alleviate any fears while ensuring that the essential needs of the population are met.
As the situation develops, the Meghalaya government remains committed to keeping the public informed and preventing any unjustified price hikes, fostering a sense of security amid uncertainty.
