Stunning Victory: 22 Maoists Eliminated in Major Operation at Karregutta Hills on Telangana-Chhattisgarh Border
In a significant advancement against left-wing extremism, security forces have successfully neutralized 22 Maoists in Bijapur’s Karregutta hills, marking the year’s largest operation against insurgents along the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border. This extensive operation, initiated on April 21, mobilized approximately 20,000 personnel led by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in collaboration with the Chhattisgarh Police.
The operation is currently in its 18th day and faces challenges, with over a dozen security personnel, including members of the CRPF’s CoBRA unit and Chhattisgarh Police’s District Reserve Guard and Special Task Force, sustaining injuries. Assistant Commandant Sagar Borade of CoBRA suffered severe injuries, tragically losing a leg in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast. Similarly, a CoBRA commando from the 206th battalion was critically injured in another blast, highlighting the hostile environment in these rugged terrains.
CRPF Director General G P Singh has been actively overseeing the operation from Raipur and Jagdalpur since April 19, emphasizing its significance. He has visited the Karregutta hills multiple times, coordinating efforts with state police chiefs through twice-daily meetings at Raipur’s police headquarters. These meetings ensure troop rotations and maintain essential supply lines of food, water, and ammunition.
Officials describe the Karregutta hills as previously “untouched territory,” underlining the complexity of the current mission. Despite severe conditions, including heavily mined areas and harsh weather, no casualties have been reported among the forces, which reflects strong coordination and strategy. “The cooperation between CRPF and Chhattisgarh Police has enabled the forces to capture and maintain control over the hills,” said a senior officer.
The forces have defused around 135 IEDs so far and launched a “final offensive.” Recently, the CRPF bolstered its strength by introducing 20 new companies, totaling about 2,000 personnel. These forces now hold the heavily fortified hill area, believed to harbor senior Naxal commanders, including Hidma of the PLGA battalion no 1, and other high-ranking individuals like Deva.
Advanced technology has been deployed in tracking these fugitives, involving four helicopters, two drone squadrons with a fleet of UAVs, and satellite imagery from the NTRO. Based on these intel inputs, Hidma was reportedly sighted near a bunker in the Karregutta Hills, prompting the precise strategic execution of this operation.
Law enforcement officials express optimism, stating that “the operation will soon reach its logical conclusion,” boosting the momentum against the insurgency. These developments mark a pivotal moment, showcasing the resilience and tactical expertise of Indian security forces in combating Naxalite strongholds and securing the region’s safety.
