India Strikes Back as Pak Army’s Relentless Offensive on J&K LoC Hits Day 12

Jammu, May 6 (IANS) — Tensions along the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan have escalated sharply as the Pakistan Army has engaged in unprovoked small arms firing for the 12th consecutive day. According to a spokesperson from the Defence Ministry, the provocative actions occurred on the night of May 5-6, targeting Indian positions in regions across the LoC, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajauri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor. In response, the Indian Army exercised a proportional retaliatory measure.

The situation intensified significantly following a tragic incident on April 22, where terrorists from the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), reportedly supported by Pakistan, killed 26 civilians—including 25 tourists—in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow. The heinous attack sparked nationwide outrage, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare a commitment to track down the terrorists and their backers. His statement highlighted a resolve to address this cowardly act unequivocally.

In reaction to the attack, India implemented a series of measures targeting Pakistan, including the deportation of Pakistani nationals, the closure of the Attari-Wagah border, suspending the Indus Water Treaty, restricting airspace for Pakistani commercial flights, and halting all trade and cultural ties between the two nations. Additionally, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has directed all border states to conduct a civil defense drill on Wednesday, aimed at educating students and residents about emergency procedures in potential wartime scenarios.

Prime Minister Modi has granted operational freedom to the armed forces to address the Pahalgam killings decisively. This decision follows consultations with top military leaders and security advisors to formulate a coherent response strategy. Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, is actively overseeing security reviews, urging the Army to utilize necessary force to apprehend those responsible for the attacks.

To send a clear message to terrorists and their supporters, security forces have initiated the demolition of properties linked to ten identified terrorists. Notably, on April 25, the residences of Adil Hussain Thokar and Asif Sheikh, both associated with the LeT and involved in the Pahalgam attack, were destroyed in Tral and Bijbehara respectively. On April 28, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly unanimously condemned the terrorist actions, passing a resolution denouncing the violence and reaffirming solidarity against terrorism.

As the situation evolves and national security remains a pivotal discourse, the Indian government continues to fortify its stance against external threats while addressing internal challenges. The ongoing tensions have underscored the critical need for vigilance and preparedness among citizens in border states, highlighting a complex interplay of regional security and civilian safety in these trying times.
