Empowering Lives: CM Commits to Expanding Blood Bank Network in Tripura
Agartala, 5th May 2025: In a significant healthcare initiative, Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha announced plans to expand the network of blood banks across Tripura. Speaking at a voluntary blood donation camp hosted by the Tripura State Blood Transfusion Board at Pragya Bhavan, Dr. Saha emphasized the vital role of youth in boosting voluntary blood donations.
Currently, there are established blood banks in every district and subdivision of the state. Dr. Saha revealed that last year alone, approximately 42,000 units of blood were stored, yet the need for donations remains critical. "To save lives, it’s imperative that our youth come forward to donate blood voluntarily," he urged.
Dr. Saha, who also serves as the state’s Health Minister, highlighted the need to maintain an adequate blood supply, noting that 1% of Tripura’s population should be available for blood donations. He cautioned that blood has a specific shelf life and cannot be stored indefinitely, making it essential to balance supply and demand. "Blood collection tends to drop for various reasons, and we must address this shortfall. I encourage everyone to donate surplus blood to help those in dire circumstances," he stated.
The Chief Minister underscored the pressing demand for blood in emergencies, such as road accidents, surgeries, and maternal healthcare. "Before surgeries, at least two units of blood are often required. Additionally, cancer patients and individuals suffering from thalassemia rely heavily on a steady blood supply. Therefore, it’s crucial to keep an adequate blood stock at all times," he explained.
Dr. Saha also noted that about 15% of the population has negative blood types, further complicating the need for diverse blood storage solutions. Looking ahead, he mentioned plans for the establishment of a separation unit system to enhance blood stock across the state, ensuring a more robust and efficient blood donation framework.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Health Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, Family Welfare and Disease Prevention Department Director Dr. Anjan Das, and GB Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, all of whom support the initiative.
As Tripura moves forward with this initiative, the call for increased voluntary blood donation is clearer than ever. Each donation has the potential to save lives, and with the state government’s efforts to amplify blood bank services, the future of healthcare in Tripura looks promising.
By encouraging a culture of generosity and community support, the government aims to ensure that no one in need of blood goes without it. As Dr. Saha aptly put it, "There can be no greater gift than the gift of life through blood donation."
