Tripura’s Inspiring Solar Initiative: Brightening Homes for 80,000 Families

In a significant move towards sustainable energy, the Tripura administration has launched a project to establish solar power plants with a total capacity of 100 megawatts. This initiative is designed to provide electricity to approximately 80,000 economically disadvantaged families in the region, specifically targeting those who use less than 100 units of electricity per month. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath emphasized that this initiative aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of transitioning from traditional power sources to renewable energy.

The government plans to implement solar power systems across all state-owned establishments, marking a bold commitment to enhancing the state’s infrastructure in a sustainable manner. Under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, progress is already underway; 266 households have been granted solar power connections, contributing to India’s broader renewable energy goals.

“I am proud to announce that Tripura has made remarkable strides towards its ambitious goal of ensuring solar power systems in 50,000 households by March 2027. We achieved the significant milestone of becoming self-reliant in the power sector six months ahead of schedule,” Nath remarked. He elaborated that the Surya Ghar Yojana, a central government initiative, aims to provide extensive access to clean energy while decreasing reliance on traditional sources. So far, 13,536 households in Tripura have registered online for this transformative program.

Nath pointed out the revolutionary potential of the Surya Ghar scheme, noting how it empowers households not only to generate their own electricity but also to save on energy bills and potentially earn income by supplying excess power back to the grid. To facilitate this, 184 consumers have availed themselves of government subsidies for solar installations, with 15 banks collectively offering loans amounting to Rs 1.75 crore.

Residential consumers are permitted to install solar systems with a maximum capacity of 10 kilowatts, with subsidies available for up to 3 kilowatts. Additionally, housing complexes and residential associations can install systems of up to 500 kilowatts, benefiting from subsidies of Rs 19,800 per kilowatt.

This robust initiative not only aligns with environmental objectives but also reflects a strong commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the underserved population in Tripura. By harnessing solar power, the state is not just addressing energy needs but is also paving the way for economic empowerment and sustainable development.

As Tripura takes these commendable steps towards a greener future, it stands as a model for other states in India. The journey towards achieving widespread access to clean and renewable energy continues, with the Surya Ghar scheme at the forefront of this crucial transformation.
