Morigaon Prepares for Thrilling Panchayat Elections: Over 2,000 Candidates Compete for Change!
Morigaon district is gearing up for a spirited showdown in the upcoming Panchayat elections, according to the Election Branch of the Morigaon District Administration. With a significant number of candidates entering the fray, the district is poised for competitive electoral battles at various levels.
In the Zila Parishad contests, Morigaon will see 29 candidates vying for seats, while one candidate has already secured victory unopposed. The Anchalik Panchayats are witnessing increased participation, with 177 candidates contesting and 14 having claimed their positions without a contest. However, the Gaon Panchayats are the focal point of this electoral race, drawing an impressive 1,892 candidates, 115 of whom have already been declared winners unopposed.
In the Jagiroad sub-division, the competition is similarly intense, with eight candidates competing for Zila Parishad seats, 51 in the Anchalik Panchayats—where nine winners have emerged unopposed—and a staggering 574 candidates in the Gaon Panchayats, where 61 have already won without contest. The Laharighat sub-division mirrors this trend, with 14 candidates in the Zila Parishad race, 89 in the Anchalik Panchayats, and 832 candidates for the Gaon Panchayats, including 20 who are unopposed victors.
Morigaon district boasts a total voter demographic of 700,430, consisting of 354,785 male voters, 345,632 female voters, and 13 from the third gender. In Jagiroad constituency (52), there are 239,523 voters—120,022 males, 119,499 females, and two from the third gender. Laharighat (53) has an electorate of 281,910, including 145,102 males, 136,800 females, and eight third-gender voters. Morigaon constituency (54) follows with 178,997 voters, composed of 89,667 males, 89,327 females, and three voters from the third gender.
The administrative structure for these elections spans three assembly constituencies and includes a total of 12 Zila Parishad constituencies, divided equally among Jagiroad, Laharighat, and Morigaon. Jagiroad’s constituencies are Daulasal, Dharmtul, Jagibhakatgaon, and Mayong; Laharighat includes Bharagaon, Laharighat, Morabari, and Rajagadhawa; while Morigaon comprises Borbaha, Charaibahi-Chabukdhara, Dandua, and Kushtoli Nij-Gowa.
In addition, Morigaon district features five Anchalik Panchayats: Mayong in Jagiroad, Bharagaon and Laharighat in Laharighat, and Borbaha and Khatuali in Morigaon. The district is also home to 84 Gaon Panchayats, with 29 located in Jagiroad, 30 in Laharighat, and 25 in Morigaon.
A total of 840 wards are distributed throughout Morigaon district—290 in Jagiroad, 300 in Laharighat, and 250 in Morigaon. Voters will cast their ballots at 972 polling stations across the region, with Jagiroad featuring 339, Laharighat 364, and Morigaon 269 stations.
