Sreejesh Shines as India Men’s Hockey Team Triumphs Over Great Britain to Seal Semis Spot
Paris: Historic Semis Berth for Indian Men’s Hockey Team in Paris Olympics
The Indian men’s hockey team showcased remarkable resilience to clinch a 1-1 (4-2) shootout victory against Great Britain, securing a spot in the semifinals of the Paris Olympics on Sunday. This achievement marks the first consecutive semifinal appearances for India since the Munich 1972 Games, where they also reached the semis in 1968 and 1972, winning bronze in both.
India, seeking to replicate or surpass their bronze medal performance from the Tokyo Olympics, saw captain Harmanpreet Singh net a goal in the 22nd minute. Great Britain’s Lee Morton scored the equalizer in the 27th minute, leading to a 1-1 tie that forced the match into a shootout. In the shootout, India capitalized on all their chances and denied Great Britain twice, sealing the quarterfinal win and advancing to the semifinals.
Great Britain began the match aggressively, keeping the Indian defenders on their toes. India, reduced to 10 men after Amit Rohidas’ red card early in the second quarter, took the lead through Harmanpreet Singh’s penalty corner conversion. Morton’s equalizer for Great Britain set the stage for a tense second half, further compounded by Sumit’s green card, which reduced India to nine men temporarily.
Despite these setbacks, India’s defense, led by goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who is playing his final tournament, held strong against persistent British attacks. The match’s climax unfolded in the shootout, with James Albery, Harmanpreet Singh, Zach Wallace, and Sukhjeet Singh scoring initially. Crucial misses by Connor Williamson and Phillip Roger allowed Lalit Upadhyay and Rajkumar Pal’s successful strikes to secure India’s 4-2 shootout win.
India will next face the winner of the quarterfinal between Germany and Argentina in the semifinals on Tuesday.
