Tragic Battle: Over 16,000 Pigs Culled in Mizoram’s Desperate Fight Against African Swine Fever Outbreak
African Swine Fever Crisis Intensifies in Mizoram
The African Swine Fever (ASF) situation in Mizoram has reached critical levels, with swine deaths now totaling 8,718 as of Sunday. The crisis worsened with 34 new swine deaths and the culling of 59 additional pigs on the same day.
Since the beginning of January 2024, the state has culled a staggering 16,158 pigs to counter the outbreak. Lunglei district has been particularly hard hit, reporting 24 new deaths and the culling of 15 pigs. Hnahthial district followed with seven deaths and the culling of 29 pigs, while Aizawl district saw three deaths and nine pigs culled.
The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department has confirmed that the disease has affected 200 villages across the state. The ASF outbreak, persisting since 2021, has been particularly rampant during the warm monsoon season. According to departmental records, the ASF crisis led to the deaths of 33,417 pigs in 2021, 12,795 in 2022, and 1,039 in 2023.
Officials are grappling with the escalating situation, striving to implement measures to mitigate the spread of ASF. The scale of the outbreak underscores the urgent need for efficient disease control and management strategies to safeguard the state’s livestock, a critical resource for many local farmers.
As the situation develops, authorities continue to monitor the spread of ASF and implement necessary culling procedures to prevent further losses. The community remains on high alert, particularly in the heavily affected areas, awaiting further updates and guidance from agricultural and veterinary experts.
The persistent nature of ASF, exacerbated by climatic conditions, poses significant challenges. The collective effort of the government, local agencies, and farmers will be crucial to curtail the outbreak and restore health and stability to Mizoram’s pig population.
