Strengthening Energy Future: The Critical Call for a Robust Power Grid

In an effort to bolster Arunachal Pradesh’s energy infrastructure, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has underscored the urgent need for a fortified power transmission and distribution network to support the state’s burgeoning hydropower projects. This emphasis came during a high-level review meeting concerning the ‘comprehensive scheme for strengthening the transmission and distribution system,’ held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall in Namsai on Thursday.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Chief Minister Mein highlighted the significant strides made in the region’s power sector. “In recent years, we have significantly accelerated the development of the power sector in Arunachal Pradesh,” he stated, noting that a recent Power Steering Committee meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pema Khandu in Tawang focused on expediting hydropower projects. Mein stressed the necessity of preparing the transmission and distribution infrastructure to handle immediate power evacuation and distribution, considering the multiple hydropower projects now underway.

Mein tasked the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) with expediting the completion of pending work under the comprehensive scheme, urging them to meet deadlines and ensure seamless coordination with the district administration and power department. He emphasized the need for cooperation with local legislators to facilitate smooth and effective project execution on the ground.

The comprehensive scheme is integral to ensuring reliable and efficient power supply, particularly in remote and underserved regions of the state. During the meeting, the Deputy Chief Minister reviewed the status of ongoing projects, assessed progress, and sought explanations for any delays. He stressed the importance of a timely and coordinated approach to meet Arunachal Pradesh’s escalating power demands.

It was disclosed that three pivotal projects within the scheme — the 33 KV side of the 132 KV Niglok substation, the 33 KV Niglok-Ruskin line, and the 33 KV Oyan substation — were successfully commissioned on the day of the meeting. These advancements are expected to significantly enhance the state’s power distribution capabilities.

The meeting saw participation from a cadre of high-ranking officials, including Agriculture Minister Gabriel D Wangsu, Deputy Speaker Kardo Nyigyor, power minister adviser Jikke Tako, and several MLAs such as Zingnu Namchoom, Mutchu Mithi, and Tenzin Nyima Glow, among others. Also present were PGCIL CMD RK Tyagi, PCCF P Subramanium, Adviser to the DCM Anupam Tangu, Power Secretary RK Sharma, district commissioners, and senior officials from the PowerGrid.

These steps underline the state’s commitment to advancing its power infrastructure in alignment with the needs of its growing population and economic activities, affirming Arunachal Pradesh’s focus on leveraging its hydropower potential to foster overall development. The collaborative effort aims to ensure that the state not only meets its current energy requirements but also positions itself for future growth in the energy sector.
