Unlock the Hidden Beauty of Dandeli: Overcome Connectivity Challenges in Karnataka’s Coastal Gem
Dandeli, located in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district, is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and thrilling adventure activities such as white water rafting and jungle safaris. Despite its appeal to tourists across India, this popular adventure tourism destination grapples with significant connectivity challenges due to inadequate public transport options. Though Dandeli boasts a century-old railway station, no passenger trains serve this hub. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus stand exists, but buses from distant locations like Bengaluru are a rare sight, highlighting the area’s reliance on private transport.
Visitors frequently encounter difficulties reaching Dandeli directly via public transportation. As Sowbarnika S. from Bengaluru shared, “I planned to visit Dandeli a few weeks ago and checked the options to get there. While there were no direct trains, KSRTC had two Sarige buses, which did not have the sleeper option. For a journey that takes around 11 hours, it would be highly uncomfortable to travel in a seating-only bus. With no other choice, I booked a private bus and paid over ₹1,000 for a one-way ticket.”
Local stakeholders, including resort owners and transport workers, believe that improved connectivity could significantly boost tourism in Dandeli. Ahmed, a cab driver, pointed out, “Our neighbouring States make connecting tourist destinations through public transport a priority. But, despite numerous requests, our elected representatives have not been able to bring passenger trains to Dandeli even though goods trains ply regularly on this route.” This sentiment remains, despite hopes once kindled during Suresh Angadi’s tenure as the Minister of State for Indian Railways, when progress seemed possible.
Officials at the South Western Railway cite logistical challenges as the primary reason passenger trains do not serve Dandeli. An official explained that the journey from Hubballi to Alnavar requires reversing the train engine at Alnavar, which is time-consuming. He noted, “There is not much demand for train services to Dandeli. Even a train with just eight coaches will have a seating capacity of up to 400. We will definitely run trains if we see such a huge demand for seats.” However, a local resort owner countered, asserting that demand cannot be accurately gauged without trial services or proper promotion.
On the bus front, KSRTC currently offers limited services to Dandeli, with no sleeper options from major cities like Bengaluru and Mysuru. This scarcity has been attributed to the influence of the private bus lobby. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy acknowledged this gap and revealed plans to address it. “The number of tourists going to Dandeli has increased. We have decided to deploy more buses there. Out of the 50 non-AC sleeper buses we are on-boarding, we will deploy a few to Dandeli. It will take around two months. We also plan to renovate the old bus stand there,” he stated.
As Dandeli’s tourism continues to grow, addressing these transport challenges remains crucial. Enhanced connectivity could unlock further economic benefits while making this beautiful and adventure-filled part of Karnataka more accessible to tourists eager to explore its offerings.
