Houston Honors Boxing Icon George Foreman: A Legacy of Strength and Spirit
Memorial Service to Honor Boxing Legend George Foreman in Houston
A celebration of the life of George Foreman, the iconic boxer, pastor, and entrepreneur, is set to take place in his hometown of Houston on Monday. Family, friends, and the public are invited to attend the memorial service at the Wortham Theater Center, a performing arts venue that hosts the city’s ballet and opera companies. The event will honor Foreman’s remarkable life, which spanned over five decades and included two heavyweight championship titles, a successful career as a pastor, and a lasting legacy as the face of the George Foreman Grill.
Houston Mayor, John Whitmire, will deliver a eulogy, along with Michael Moorer, the former boxer Foreman defeated in 1994 to become the oldest man at the time to win the heavyweight championship at 45. The service will also feature a tribute by George Foreman IV, one of the boxing legend’s five sons. "We’re going to celebrate the life of George Foreman, a man who embodied the spirit of resilience and determination," said Mayor Whitmire. Foreman passed away on March 21 at the age of 76, with his family announcing the news on social media, stating that he "peacefully departed, surrounded by loved ones."
Born in Marshall, Texas, but raised in Houston’s Fifth Ward, a historically Black neighborhood, Foreman began his boxing career as an Olympic gold medalist in 1968 before turning professional the following year. He won the heavyweight championship in 1973, defeating Joe Frazier, but lost the title the next year in a famous bout against Muhammad Ali in Zaire. After a 10-year retirement from boxing, Foreman returned to the ring in 1994, delivering an electrifying knockout against Moorer, cementing his place in boxing history.
Foreman’s post-boxing career took a remarkable turn as he became an ordained minister in 1978 and founded The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in 1980. He later returned to the public eye with the George Foreman Grill, a simple cooking machine that sold over 100 million units and catapulted him to international fame. A biographical movie based on his life was released in 2023. With a career spanning 76-5, and 12 children, including five sons who bear his name, George Foreman left an indelible mark on the world. As the city of Houston prepares to pay tribute to its beloved son, the celebration will be an emotional tribute to a man who defied convention and inspired generations through his unyielding spirit.
