Alarming Surge: Criminalization of Politics Ignites Ethnic Violence and Crime Wave in Tripura | MorungExpress

Agartala, August 2 (IANS) — The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Tripura Assembly, Jitendra Chaudhury, accused the BJP-led state government of fostering criminalisation that has led to ethnic violence and various crimes over the past six years. Chaudhury’s comments followed a recent visit to Ganda Twisa, a site of large-scale violence after tribal college student Parameshwar Reang succumbed to injuries sustained in a July 7 assault, leading to arson and looting on July 12.

A CPI-M delegation visited Ganda Twisa in Dhalai district, where over 40 houses, 30 shops, and numerous vehicles were destroyed. Approximately 400 individuals from 165 families are currently residing in a relief camp. Chaudhury demanded an impartial probe into the violence through a Special Investigating Team (SIT) led by a senior-ranking police officer.

He criticized the state administration for not assisting the displaced in returning to their homes and failing to provide adequate support at the relief camp. Chaudhury asserted that the criminalisation of politics by the BJP has led to increased lawlessness and claimed that law enforcement has wrongfully targeted victims instead of perpetrators.

The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) also expressed its concern and has issued notices to the Director General of Police and the District Magistrate of Dhalai for a preliminary report within three weeks. Headed by retired Tripura High Court judge Swapan Chandra Das, the commission underscored that public servants’ negligence in preventing human rights violations is actionable.

In response to the violence, the Tripura government has sanctioned Rs 6 lakh for Kharagaram Reang, Parameshwar Reang’s father, and allocated Rs 1.54 crore for the affected families. Interim financial assistance of Rs 25,000 has already been distributed to each of the displaced families.
