Colors Dancing with Joy: Meitei Hindus Celebrate Vibrant Cheiraoba Festivals
Manipur Celebrates Cheiraoba, A Unique Hindu New Year Festival
In a vibrant display of cultural heritage, the Meitei Hindu community in Manipur came together to celebrate their unique New Year festival, Cheiraoba 2025, on Monday. This festive occasion is marked by a blend of ancestral reverence and hopes for a prosperous year, showcasing the community’s resilience and adaptability.
At the heart of Cheiraoba is a thorough cleansing of homes by every Meitei Hindu family, followed by a grand feast featuring a diverse array of dishes prepared using fresh, seasonal vegetables. This tradition symbolizes the connection between the community and the land’s bounty, highlighting their deep-rooted connection to the land and its natural resources.
The observance continues with a sacred ritual where the eldest family member offers the prepared meal to the Hindu Gods and Goddesses worshipped within their household. This act of reverence is followed by a communal meal, fostering a sense of unity and shared blessings among family members.
In a nod to the region’s rich cultural heritage, families traditionally climb a nearby hill, regarded as the sacred abode of their deities. This symbolic ascent serves as a poignant reminder of the community’s historical connection to the hill regions of Manipur, acknowledging the struggles and triumphs of their ancestors.
Interestingly, the celebration of Cheiraoba is believed to have been influenced by the Bengali calendar, adopted by many Meiteis in the early 18th century. This cultural adaptation has resulted in a unique blend of indigenous traditions and adopted religious practices, reflecting the evolving cultural landscape of Manipur.
As families gathered to celebrate Cheiraoba, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla extended his warmest greetings to the people of Manipur. In his message, the Governor reminded the community that Cheiraoba is a time of renewal and celebration, marking the transition from the old to the new, symbolizing fresh beginnings, hope, and progress.
“On this auspicious occasion, let us reaffirm our commitment to peace, prosperity, and harmony in our communities. May the coming year bring happiness, success, and well-being to every household in Manipur,” the Governor added.
As the people of Manipur embark on a new year, they do so with a renewed sense of hope and unity, grateful for the opportunity to celebrate their unique cultural heritage and look forward to a prosperous and peaceful future.
