India’s North-East Corner Demands Justice: Arunachal MLA Calls for Action Against JNU Hostel Disparities
Ninong Ering, a member of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, has written a letter to Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, expressing concerns over the alleged discrimination faced by Northeastern students in the Barak Hostel allotment process at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). According to Ering, the hostel’s original purpose of providing preferential accommodation for students from the region has been deviated from, leading to the exclusion of many eligible students from marginalized communities.
Ering’s letter highlights the reported lack of transparency and fairness in the hostel allocation system, citing representations made by student groups and individuals. He is urging the Union Minister to initiate immediate dialogue with the JNU administration to ensure that a transparent and equitable hostel allotment mechanism is enforced, redressal of grievances is provided to affected Northeastern students, and robust monitoring systems are created to prevent similar disparities in future student-related policies.
The Barak Hostel, established with assistance from the North Eastern Council (NEC), was meant to provide a safe and welcoming space for students from the region. However, Ering claims that deviations from the original purpose have left many students feeling overlooked and disheartened. Quoting student representations, Ering emphasizes that such exclusions only widen the socio-educational gap, particularly in the context of historically underrepresented Northeastern students in premier academic spaces.
