WhatsApp users around the world were hit with a string of issues on Saturday, April 12, as messages and status uploads were hindered by a widespread technical glitch. The first wave of problems began around 5:22 PM Indian Standard Time (IST), with the situation resurfacing again around 8 PM, according to real-time outage monitoring platform DownDetector. The platform tracked at least 597 complaints by early evening, with 85% related to messaging, 12% to general app functionality, and 3% to login difficulties.
Frustrated users took to social media to vent their frustrations, with one user commenting on delayed status uploads and declaring WhatsApp as “down again.” The technical issues came on the heels of a similar outage in late February, which impacted messaging, voice calling, and WhatsApp Web, prompting over 9,000 complaints globally. While Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, has not released an official statement, users also reported concurrent issues accessing both Facebook and Instagram, hinting at a possible larger server-side issue affecting Meta platforms.
The digital disruption was further exacerbated by a nationwide outage in digital payment systems, particularly affecting the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). As of 12 PM IST, nearly 1,168 complaints were filed regarding failed transactions. Google Pay users logged 96 complaints, while Paytm accounted for 23 cases. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) acknowledged internal technical glitches and confirmed that some transactions were failing intermittently, apologizing for the inconvenience and assuring users that technical teams were working on a resolution.
