From UPSC to Bollywood Stardom: The Untold Story of a Rugged Icon Who Defied Conventions and Captivated Hearts
Kanwaljit Singh Walia, a Rags-to-Riches Story in Hindi Cinema
In a world where millions of Indians strive to crack the prestigious Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam, few have etched their mark in the entertainment industry. Meet Kanwaljit Singh Walia, a man who turned his life around after giving UPSC a shot, only to find success in Hindi cinema.
Born in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Kanwaljit initially aimed for a career in the Air Force. Despite passing the UPSC NDA exam, his dreams were shattered when he failed the medical exam due to hearing loss in his right ear. Undeterred, he tried his luck in the Merchant Navy, but even that didn’t work out. It was then that he stumbled upon an admission form for the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune and decided to submit it on a whim.
Kanwaljit’s introduction to the film industry wasn’t easy. His first two films, “Hum Rahe Na Hum” and “Shaq,” didn’t fare well, prompting him to shift his focus to television. With his impressive height of over six feet, he was often compared to Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, earning him the nickname “The Next Big Thing.”
Kanwaljit’s breakthrough came when he debuted in the 1977 film “Shankar Hussain.” He went on to appear in a range of successful films, including “Satte Pe Satta,” “Matches,” “Dil Mange More,” “Mere Brother Ki Dulhan,” and “Raazi.” However, his television career proved to be the real game-changer, with popular shows like “Aahat,” “Family No. 1,” “Wajood,” “Saans,” “Buniyaad,” and “Abhimaan” cementing his status as a household name.
Despite his success, Kanwaljit’s personal life was marked by controversy. Married to actress Anuradha Patel, who debuted in “Love in Goa” and often appeared alongside Rekha, the couple has two sons, Siddharth and Aditya. Anuradha is the daughter of Virendra Patel and Bharti Jaffrey, whose father, Ashok Kumar, was a legendary actor in Indian cinema.
Kanwaljit’s story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the unpredictability of life. While many might not know him as a UPSC pass-out, he remains an integral part of the Hindi film and television industry, leaving an indelible mark on the world of Indian entertainment.
