Indian Women’s Team gears up for ODI Tri-Series in Sri Lanka, Harmanpreet Kaur to lead the squad
The Indian women’s cricket team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, will take on Sri Lanka and South Africa in the upcoming ODI tri-series starting April 27. This marks Harmanpreet’s return to the leadership role after being rested for the home series against Ireland in January. The 35-year-old right-hander has had a rollercoaster year, having sustained injuries to her knee and neck in previous series, but she has made a strong comeback, leading Mumbai Indians to the Women’s Premier League title last month.
The selection committee, comprising of BCCI officials, has picked a 15-member squad for the tournament, with Smriti Mandhana as Harmanpreet’s deputy. The team will face Sri Lanka in the opening match on April 27, with four matches each in the double round-robin league event. The top two teams will qualify for the final on May 11, which will be played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The team includes uncapped players Kashvee Gautam, Sree Charani, and Shuchi Upadhyay, while pacers Renuka Singh Thakur and Titas Sadhu have been ruled out due to injuries. Renuka was rested for the Ireland series and had previously been troubled by a stress fracture in her back.
Harmanpreet was rested for the three-match ODI series against Ireland, with Smriti Mandhana leading the side, accompanied by Deepti Sharma as her deputy. This decision was taken to allow Harmanpreet to recover from her knee injury, which she sustained during the home series against the West Indies in December 2024.
