Parking Woes in Guwahati: Residents Bear the Burden of Unauthorised Parking Fines

Guwahati: The lack of adequate parking spaces in Guwahati has become a significant frustration for vehicle owners, forcing many to park in unauthorized areas and incur fines. According to Jayanta Sarathi Bora, DCP (Traffic), an astonishing 90% of traffic violations in the city stem from unauthorized parking. The city collects approximately Rs 15 lakh in fines each month, primarily from such infractions.

With only 54 GMC-authorized parking places available for a growing population of around 11 lakh, residents are left with little choice but to park in no-parking zones, on footpaths, and other unauthorized areas. This has led to substantial fines and traffic disruption. Residents argue that the fines are unfair given the limited parking options and lack of clear prohibitory signage in many unauthorized parking spots.

City resident Hemanga Baruah, recently fined Rs 2,000 for unauthorized parking, voiced the frustration felt by many. The burgeoning vehicle population, which saw 62,218 new registrations this year, underscores the urgent need for more parking spaces. The city recorded a 12.34% increase in vehicle registrations in 2023 compared to 2022.

Mayor Mrigen Sarania criticized the situation as unfair, pointing out that the GMC had proposed additional parking spaces, but many were rejected by the traffic department on security grounds. He noted the reduction from over 70 roadside parking places to the current 54, emphasizing the need for the establishment of more than 100 parking facilities to meet the rising demand.

The parking crisis has highlighted the need for immediate measures to balance traffic regulation with practical parking solutions, to alleviate the strain on residents and ensure smoother traffic flow in the city.
