Congress Exposed: BJP Unleashes Scathing Rebuke Over Waqf Land Scandal
Assam’s Waqf Land Row: BJP Postures for Showdown with Congress
The BJP in Assam has announced plans to release a list of alleged Congress leaders who have encroached upon Waqf land, prompting fresh tensions in the state. The GSedepartment oflaw nod to the Waqf Bill, Assam Waqf (Amendment) Act, which has sparked widespread protests across the country, has added fuel to the fire. Addressing the media at the BJP headquarters, the party’s leaders launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing them of large-scale mismanagement and encroachment of Waqf properties during their rule.
"We have evidence of a long list of Congress leaders who have secretly occupied Waqf lands for years, using underhand methods," said Mominul Awal, a BJP leader. "During the Congress’s tenure, the revenue from these properties was a paltry ₹70,000, but under our governance, it has skyrocketed to ₹2.56 crore, despite the absence of a Waqf committee." The remark suggests the BJP is gearing up to expose the alleged encroachment by Congress leaders, which they see as a key issue to take on in the upcoming elections.
The BJP’s Zafreen Mehjabin also targeted the Congress for its alleged apathy towards minority rights, pointing out that the party’s leaders are now raising concerns about minority rights in Parliament, but did little to safeguard them during their tenure. "It’s plain hypocrisy," she said. Mehjabin also claimed that awareness about Waqf properties in Assam has only grown under BJP rule, suggesting that the party’s efforts have shed light on an issue that was previously under the radar.
The passage of the Waqf Act has sparked intense protests in the state, with demonstrations in Guwahati’s Chachal area on Monday, calling for the law’s immediate repeal. Protesters accused the BJP-led government of targeting the Muslim community and threatening larger demonstrations in New Delhi if their demands are not met. With tensions simmering, the Waqf legislation has emerged as a potential flashpoint in the state’s political landscape ahead of the elections. The BJP’s aggressive stance and the growing protests pose a significant challenge to the party’s assertion of its commitment to minority welfare.
