PM Modi’s Groundbreaking Moment: Pamban Bridge Inauguration Live from Mandapam
Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin Misses Sea Bridge Inauguration, Focuses on Nilgiris Development
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has skipped the inauguration of the long-awaited sea bridge in Rameshwaram, citing prior commitments to the Nilgiris district. In a statement, Stalin explained that he had informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi of his inability to attend the event, instead deputing Ministers Thangam Thennarasu and Rajakannappan to welcome the Prime Minister on his behalf.
Stalin’s absence from the Rameshwaram event comes as the Tamil Nadu government continues to push for greater central support and understanding from the Modi administration. In a significant move, Stalin urged Modi to make a commitment to the people of Tamil Nadu while he is on "Tamil soil", reassuring them that they will not be penalized by the delimitation exercise. Stalin’s call for reassurance is in line with growing concerns over the potential impact of the delimitation exercise on Tamil Nadu, where several constituents have expressed anxiety over potential boundary changes.
Meanwhile, Stalin continues to focus on development initiatives in the Nilgiris, a key constituency for his DMK party. On Sunday, April 6, 2025, he inaugurated 1,703 government projects worth ₹494.51 crores in Udhagamandalam, including the newly built Udhagamandalam Government Medical College and Hospital. The opening ceremony marked a significant milestone for healthcare infrastructure in the region, with the new hospital set to cater to the needs of local residents and potential tourists. In addition to the completion of existing projects, Stalin also laid the foundation stone for 56 new initiatives worth ₹130.35 crores, a testament to the government’s commitment to regional development and economic growth.
Stalin’s decision to prioritize the Nilgiris reflects his party’s long-standing commitment to the region. By diverting focus from the Rameshwaram sea bridge inauguration, Stalin has instead centered the discussion around the progress made and the tangible outcomes achieved in the Nilgiris. This shift in emphasis serves to underscore the government’s dedication to the welfare and development of its constituents, rather than on symbolic events.
The situation was underscored by a recent study that highlighted the vulnerability of Tamil Nadu to the delimitation exercise. With 4,341 columns/ seats set to be re-drawn, the exercise carries significant implications for the region’s demography and distribution of power, interests which Stalin’s appeal highlights.
