Drainage Chaos in Arya Nagar’s Overflowing Streets: Residents Cry Out for Relief from Guwahati Municipal Corporation
Guwahati’s Neglected Drains Overwhelm Residents, GMC Fails to Act Despite Complaints
The drains at Arya Nagar in Guwahati have long been a source of frustration for the residents, with overflowing debris and filth creating a hazardous environment. Despite numerous complaints, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has failed to take adequate action to address the issue. School student Harshita notes, “Every day I use the road while going to my school… Drains are clogged. They overflow. Our parents have been constantly complaining about the situation, but no action has been taken.” Locals are now sounding the alarm, citing the increased risk of waterborne illnesses and mosquito-borne diseases that come with the standing water.
The situation is exacerbated in the rainy season, with dirty water everywhere on the road and a pungent odor that permeates the air. Shop owner, speaking to Gplus, lamented, “The situation gets even worse in the rainy season… Look at the situation now. Dirty water everywhere on the road. It smells very bad. Mosquitoes breed leading to health problems.” The mayor’s office has acknowledged the issue, with an official stating, “We are working on it… We are trying our best to clean the drains so that the general public doesn’t face any issues.” However, residents remain skeptical, pointing to the lack of tangible progress in addressing the problem.
The issue is not limited to Arya Nagar, with similar pictures of clogged and overflowing drains visible across other areas of the city. The failure of the GMC to address these concerns has left residents feeling frustrated and neglected. The need for a comprehensive drainage system, combined with effective waste management, has never been more pressing. As the rainwater continues to pour in, residents are left to deal with the consequences of the city’s neglect. The time has come for the GMC to take action and restore a basic service that is essential to the quality of life in Guwahati.
