PM Modi Unveils the Century-Ready Pamban Bridge: Secure and Timeless Train Journey Ahead – Discover Routes & Details!
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new Pamban Bridge in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, on April 6. This modern engineering marvel is proclaimed safe for train operations at speeds of up to 80 kmph for the next century, according to MP Singh, the Director of Operations at Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). As part of an expert committee formed to address safety concerns, Singh confirmed that the bridge has undergone an exhaustive evaluation to ensure its resilience and longevity.
Constructed by RVNL, the Pamban Bridge marks a significant milestone in Indian infrastructure, connecting Rameswaram to the mainland. While the bridge can support speeds of up to 160 kmph, operational speed is capped at 80 kmph due to curvature near the Rameswaram end. This decision follows an in-depth review prompted by design and fatigue concerns raised by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). The panel’s comprehensive analysis, which included input from leading institutions like IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, and international visits, concluded that the bridge meets all relevant safety provisions.
The bridge’s robust surface protection system assures a lifespan of 38 years without maintenance and up to 58 years with minimal upkeep, as per reports from Southern Railway. Additionally, the vertical lift span, designed to rise to 17 meters to allow passage for ships, strictly adheres to Indian and Euro Codes, ensuring long-term durability against fatigue.
The old bridge, constructed by the British in 1914, served faithfully for over a century, despite challenging environmental conditions, before being retired in December 2022. The new Pamban Bridge, built at a cost of over ₹550 crore, extends 2.08 kilometers with a distinctive configuration of 99 spans and a vertical lift span of 72.5 meters, enabling smooth maritime and rail traffic.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw initiated the formation of the high-level committee tasked with scrutinizing and rectifying the concerns raised by the CRS. The committee’s findings confirmed the adequacy of the bridge’s design and construction practices, noting the involvement of top experts from the Indian Railways and academia, as well as independent assessments by the Welding Research Institute in Trichy.
With comprehensive assessments and adherence to global best practices, the inauguration of this bridge is set to showcase India’s engineering prowess.
