Revolutionary Kochi Metro’s Electric Feeder Buses: Empowering Over 2 Lakh Commuters with Eco-Friendly Commutes
Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has reported a significant upswing in the use of its air-conditioned electric feeder buses, with over 200,000 commuters riding their 15-strong fleet since its introduction on January 16. This development highlights a growing reliance on these buses for seamless connectivity between metro stations and surrounding areas. One notable success story is the High Court-MG Road-High Court circular route, where three feeder buses, despite initial concerns over low usage, have seen doubled patronage in recent weeks, averaging 773 daily passengers.
In the first week after the service commenced on March 19, 1,556 commuters used the circular route. By the week of March 29 to April 4, this number had more than doubled to 5,415 passengers. This indicates a positive trend as the buses operate every ten minutes within this commuter-heavy corridor. KMRL spokespersons are optimistic about future growth, underscoring the increase in patronage as a sign of growing acceptance and trust in the service.
Expanding the network, KMRL plans to deploy additional feeder buses on the Kadavanthra-Panampilly Nagar corridor. This area currently lacks public transport connectivity, signaling another opportunity to enhance the public transit ecosystem. Across different routes, an average of 3,102 passengers have been reported to use the e-bus fleet daily. Specifically, the Aluva metro terminal to international airport route has seen an average of 1,350 daily commuters, culminating in a striking total of 102,000 passengers on this route alone since inception. Furthermore, the Infopark route sees around 890 daily commuters relying on these feeder buses for their travel needs.
Nevertheless, KMRL faces criticism from some commuters for its omission of feeder services on certain dense passenger routes, such as the Vyttila-Menaka-Vyttila circuit. This area suffers from a deficit of intra-city air-conditioned buses, making it a prime candidate for future expansion. Metro officials attribute this oversight to impending fleet enhancements, asserting that as more buses become available, coverage on such high-demand routes will be addressed. They emphasize the city’s eastward expansion beyond the Edappally-Aroor bypass as an area of focus, aiming to better meet the city’s growing transit demands.
