Geographically and Culturally Entwined: Assam and Arunachal’s Unbreakable Bond
Assam and Arunachal Pradesh: Two Neighbors, One Cultural Bond
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the cultural ties between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, stating that they are not only geographically close but also share a deep cultural connection. During a visit to the Mopin festival celebration in West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday, Sarma highlighted the significant bond between the two states. He stressed that the two Chief Ministers, Sarma and Pema Khandu of Arunachal Pradesh, are committed to resolving the longstanding border dispute between the states during their tenure.
Sarma also paid tribute to Assam’s legendary musician Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, who had a deep affection for Arunachal Pradesh. To commemorate his 100th birth anniversary in 2026, Sarma announced that both states would celebrate his legacy, acknowledging the profound impact he had on the region’s cultural landscape.
The Mopin festival, celebrated by the Galo tribe of Arunachal Pradesh in April, is an agricultural harvest festival that honors goddess Mopin Ane for a good harvest and seeks prosperity. The festival features traditional dances, including the Popir dance performed by women in white attire, accompanied by folk songs. Sarma emphasized the significance of preserving and celebrating indigenous tribal culture through events like Mopin.
Arunachal Pradesh, with its rich cultural heritage, is set to become a major tourism hub, Sarma stated. The state is also emerging as a leading hydrocarbon state, with the government exploring its vast natural resources. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives, such as the ‘Transformation through Transportation’ and ‘Act East Policy,’ have unlocked the region’s potential, transforming it into a gateway to Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing economies.
Sarma credited the Prime Minister with empowering the northeast states, giving them the autonomy to drive development. He emphasized that under Modi’s guidance, the next 20 years would be crucial for the region’s growth, predicting that it would become the most developed region in the country. The expansion of roads, highways, and railway networks has improved connectivity, making it easier for visitors and businesses to access the region.
As the region continues to grow and develop, Sarma urged the people of Arunachal Pradesh to work together with the government to become the leading region in the country. With its unique cultural heritage, immense natural resources, and strategic location, Arunachal Pradesh is poised to play a significant role in India’s development journey.
