Outrage as Nagaland MP Accuses Centre of Sidelining Crucial Naga Political Resolution
Congress MP S Supongmeren Jamir has criticized the BJP-led NDA government for delaying the resolution of the longstanding Naga political issue. Addressing a press conference at the Congress party office, Jamir accused the Centre of failing to implement two existing agreements and instead changing interlocutors, despite claims that peace talks were concluded.
The Central government has been engaged in separate negotiations with the National Socialist Council of Nagalim-Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM) since 1997 and the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) since 2017. A framework agreement was signed with NSCN-IM on August 3, 2015, followed by an agreed position with NNPGs in December 2017. The NSCN-IM’s demand for a separate constitution and flag for the Nagas remains a significant obstacle to a final resolution.
Jamir also criticized the Nagaland Assembly’s decision to operate without an opposition, calling it a failure of democratic principles. “Our party is committed to fighting for an early solution,” he emphasized, expressing Congress’s willingness to consider suggestions from NGOs, government entities, and national workers to resolve the issue.
Jamir assured that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is fully informed about the Naga issues. He referenced the Naga people’s frustration, recalling the ‘no solution no election’ slogan from the 2018 state assembly polls, which clashed with the BJP’s ‘election for solution’ promise.
“They (BJP) are making false promises, but the Naga people still hope that BJP will bring drastic changes. It will not. So people must come forward and raise their voices for their rights,” Jamir urged.
Jamir’s remarks highlight ongoing dissatisfaction and a call for action to address longstanding issues impacting the Naga community. He underscored Congress’s dedication to achieving a timely resolution and urged the public to advocate for their rights.
