Nagaon Administration Cracks Down on Freebies Ahead of Panchayat Polls to Ensure Fair Voting Process
Assam’s Nagaon District Enforces Restrictions Ahead of Panchayat Elections
The Nagaon District Administration in Assam has taken a slew of measures to ensure a peaceful and fair Panchayat election, set to take place on May 7. District Magistrate Narendra Kumar Shah has issued an order under Section 163 of the Assam Public Security Act (APS), imposing restrictions on various activities that may potentially disturb the peace in the region. These restrictions will remain in force until the election process is complete.
Pursuant to the order, the public is prohibited from organizing public meetings, processions, or rallies without prior permission from the district administration. Additionally, the use of loudspeakers or inflammatory speeches that may disrupt public peace is also banned. Similarly, displaying posters or banners with objectionable content, collecting funds or donations from the public without permission, and carrying firearms, explosives, or dangerous weapons are strictly prohibited. Unlicensed gatherings or meetings are also barred.
However, Notably, these restrictions do not apply to law enforcement personnel, students, government employees, or state election commission officials on duty. Furthermore, religious gatherings at places of worship are exempted from these restrictions, provided prior intimation is given to the concerned authorities. The order comes into effect immediately and will remain in force until further notice, as stated in an official press note issued by the district administration.

According to Section 163 of the APS, the district magistrate has the power to prohibit and regulate assembly, procession, and gatherings that may potentially disturb public peace, said Binita Barman, a local resident. "I welcome these measures to ensure a peaceful election process," she added.
In related news, a special health and wellness camp was launched in Baksa district earlier this week, aimed at providing essential healthcare services to the rural populace. "This initiative is crucial in reaching out to the underserved communities and ensuring they receive the necessary medical attention," said an ASHA worker involved in the camp, who wished to remain anonymous.
The Panchayat election is expected to be a closely contested affair, with several local leaders vying for power. The election will be a litmus test for the region’s newly elected government, which has aimed to deliver better healthcare services to the rural population. The Nagaon District Administration’s efforts to maintain peace and order ahead of the polls are a welcome development, ensuring a free and fair election process.
By enforcing these restrictions, the district administration aims to prevent any untoward incidents that may mar the election process. The measures, while stringent, are expected to go a long way in maintaining peace and order in the region. As the polls draw near, the focus remains on ensuring a peaceful and incident-free election process. The Nagaon District Administration’s efforts will be closely watched as the region gears up for the elections.
