Urgent Alert: Israeli Military Orders New Evacuation of Gaza City Neighborhoods Amid Rising Tensions
In a renewed escalation of the ongoing conflict, the Israeli military has issued evacuation orders for several neighborhoods in Gaza City. This latest directive has intensified the distress of the already war-weary Palestinian population, further catalyzed by deadly Israeli airstrikes. The Palestinian health authorities reported that recent strikes on a school-turned-shelter resulted in the deaths of dozens, including children. In response to this, the Israeli government is reportedly investigating the incident.
These evacuation orders mark yet another wave of displacement for many Palestinians, a grim continuation of hardships experienced during the 15-month war in the Gaza Strip. A fragile ceasefire that had lasted for two months disintegrated in mid-March, after negotiations between Israel and Hamas failed to extend the peace agreement. With the ceasefire’s collapse, Israel has initiated an aggressive bombing campaign across Gaza, purportedly aiming to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages.
The Israeli military’s Arabic-language spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, conveyed a stern warning via social media, urging civilians to move southward and labeling it a “final” alert before the next offensive. Mr. Adraee suggested that militant operations among civilian populations were ongoing, exacerbating the threat.
Despite the gravity of these warnings, a number of residents have resisted relocation, citing numerous previous displacements or a lack of viable places to seek refuge. Conversely, many have complied with the orders, adding to the chaos and suffering in the conflict zone.
The incident in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood, where the school strike unfolded, remains under investigation. As of Friday morning, the Israeli military had not yet issued an official statement regarding the details of the event.
The humanitarian impact is tangible, with verified videos showing the aftermath of the Dar al-Arqam school explosion. This was followed by harrowing scenes at Al Ahli Arab Hospital, where dust-covered and injured children were brought in for treatment. According to the Gaza health ministry, 27 bodies were received post-strike, though the ministry’s casualty counts do not differentiate between civilians and combatants.
One of the victims was the grandson of Khalil al-Hayya, a prominent Hamas negotiator. In past conflicts, Israel has asserted that certain schools have been used by Hamas as operational hubs, claims which Hamas vehemently denies. The United Nations has previously criticized such strikes on schools as potentially illegal, pointing to the excessive harm inflicted on noncombatants.
Since the ceasefire collapsed on March 18, the conflict escalation has claimed more than 1,000 Palestinian lives, according to Gaza health officials, with the total death toll surpassing 50,000 since the war began. The conflict initially erupted following a lethal Hamas-led attack in Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 casualties.
Amidst the relentless hostilities, the region’s inhabitants face an increasingly desperate situation with dwindling hope for immediate peace. Nader Ibrahim contributed significant reports to this coverage.
