Shocking Divide: Trump Tariffs Ignite Fierce Debate in India’s Electronics Manufacturing Industry
The recent announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose reciprocal tariffs on imports from various countries has ignited a heated debate within India’s electronics manufacturing sector. Some industry leaders believe India’s aspiration to become a global electronics manufacturing powerhouse will remain unaffected in the long run. Meanwhile, others voice significant concerns, warning that persistent tariffs could shift momentum towards countries with lower U.S. taxes, like Brazil. This development is crucial as India grows increasingly vital for tech companies such as Apple, seeking manufacturing alternatives beyond China.
Atul Lall, Managing Director and CEO of Dixon Technologies, India’s leading contract manufacturer, believes the main focus for Indian electronic manufacturing services (EMS) companies continues to be the domestic market, which remains largely insulated from these changes. He emphasizes that it’s premature to predict the ultimate impact on Indian businesses but notes the necessity of monitoring how companies establish operations back in the U.S. He suggests that tariff stability and ongoing trade negotiations between India and the U.S. could significantly influence the future trajectory of these companies.
Conversely, Navkendar Singh, Associate Vice-President at IDC India, highlights the challenges posed by policy uncertainty and possible geopolitical tensions. He warns that this could prompt companies like Apple to reconsider expanding operations in India. Current bilateral trade discussions between India and the U.S. could play a pivotal role in determining the future of the electronics industry, potentially compelling companies to plant footholds back in the U.S., thus affecting India’s efforts to climb the global electronics value chain.
Data from the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) highlights that iPhones comprise 70% of India’s smartphone exports, with an estimated 15% being dispatched directly to the U.S. This exposure could cost Apple an additional $600 million in import taxes, a scenario not yet addressed by the company publicly. Apple’s strategy to diversify manufacturing, including establishing a significant production presence in India, began in 2017, aiming to reduce dependence on Chinese facilities.
Senior industry analysts suggest that Apple’s potential $10 billion tariff burden could drive the company to consider locations with lower tariffs, such as Brazil. India’s Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw mentioned that Apple currently has 64 assembly plants in the country, with significant contributions from Tata Electronics and Foxconn’s Indian operations, bolstering India’s position as a key manufacturing hub.
However, Trump’s tariff policies might spark extensive global negotiations, potentially disrupting current dynamics where India benefits from tech firms diversifying away from China. A senior brokerage firm analyst warns of the potential for these tariffs to impact India’s economic goals for 2030 by affecting localization efforts and value addition growth. Presently, Apple is a primary customer for Indian electronic assembly services, and a significant shift could alter India’s role within the global supply chain.
Tarun Pathak from Counterpoint Research considers these tariffs an opportunity for international discussions. He cautions that sustained tariffs might hinder India’s growth as a major electronics exporter unless countermeasures, like reciprocal tariffs or new trade deals, are enacted.
Ajai Chowdhry, co-founder of HCL Technologies, cautions against being utilized as a route for indirect exports amidst this shifting landscape, urging vigilance against becoming a dumping ground for electronic waste amid evolving U.S.-China trade dynamics.
