Heroic Road-Cum-Embankment in Dhubri Saves Assam’s Precious Cropland and Habitats from Devastating Floods
In an extraordinary initiative, officials from the Dhubri district water resource department in West Assam constructed a crucial 1,500-meter stretch of road cum bandh alongside the Gangadhar River in just 10 to 15 days, ahead of a devastating flood. This timely intervention saved thousands of hectares of cropland, numerous homes, and valuable government properties in the area.
The Koimari Part-I village Panchayat, under the Agomoni revenue circle in Dhubri, had previously suffered severe damage in 2022 when the Gangadhar River breached an existing road cum bandh from Bholarkhas to Koimari. The resulting deluge left thousands of hectares of cropland submerged, wreaking havoc on local farmers’ livelihoods.
In May 2024, Assam’s Water Resource Minister, Pijush Hazarika, spearheaded efforts to reconstruct the road cum bandh to protect about 25-30 villages with a combined population of around 50,000. The protective structure was crucial in safeguarding residents, farmlands, and government assets from floodwaters.
According to local residents, SA Enterprise, a contractual firm, was commissioned to undertake the rapid construction of the road cum bandh. The swift and effective completion of the project, reported by local villagers, played a pivotal role in shielding them and their agricultural lands from the furious flood.
Villagers of Koimari have openly expressed their gratitude to Minister Pijush Hazarika for his decisive action. Despite the lack of immediate government funding, Hazarika’s verbal directive to SA Enterprise ensured the project’s completion. Consequently, communities including Bidyardabri, Chagolia (Parts I-III), and Halakura were spared from the Gangadhar River’s floodwaters.
This commendable feat highlights the significant impact of quick, coordinated disaster response efforts in mitigating potential losses and safeguarding lives and property during natural calamities.
