In a significant milestone, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that the Aadhaar face authentication system has witnessed substantial growth, with over 78 percent of its total transactions occurring in the fiscal year 2024-25. The system, launched in October 2022, has recorded a cumulative transaction count exceeding 130.5 crore, with 102 crore transactions processed in the ongoing financial year alone.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT has reported that this surge in adoption is a testament to the growing trust in the technology and its seamless benefits for Aadhaar number holders. The system has become a reliable biometric verification method across multiple sectors, including fintech, finance, and telecommunications. “This milestone demonstrates the widespread acceptance of face authentication as a reliable biometric verification method,” the ministry stated.

The Aadhaar face authentication system is being actively used in various government schemes to ensure the efficient and targeted delivery of benefits. Several flagship programs, such as PM Awas (Urban), PM E-Drive, PM-JAY, PM Ujjwala, PM Kisan, and PM Internship, have integrated this technology to streamline beneficiary authentication. This is particularly significant for individuals who face challenges with fingerprint-based biometric verification due to age-related or occupational factors.

The system is designed to resist video replay attacks and static photo-based fraud attempts, making it a robust and contactless verification solution. It is also compatible with both Android and iOS platforms, enhancing both security and convenience for users. By allowing users to authenticate their identity with just a face scan, this advanced biometric system reinforces Aadhaar’s role as a trusted digital identity framework.

Currently, 102 entities, spanning both government and private sectors, are leveraging Aadhaar face authentication for secure identity verification.
