Uprising at Ambedkar University as Peaceful Protests Erupt Over Suspension of Postgraduate Student in Delhi
The suspension of a final-year postgraduate student at Dr. B R Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD) has sparked an indefinite sit-in protest on campus, beginning Tuesday. The student, an activist of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), was suspended for six months for allegedly criticizing the Vice-Chancellor’s Republic Day speech via the official university email system. Additionally, the student was prohibited from entering the campus during this period.
The protest comes after an email from the Dean of Academic Affairs, sent to faculty members last week, urging them to report classroom disruptions caused by students or student collectives. The email stated that certain disruptions have been affecting classroom instruction, and faculty members are required to document specific details regarding the incident, including date, time, and location, as well as any actions taken to address the disruption. According to a source, this email was intended to maintain discipline on campus rather than an official statement by the university.
The suspended student, an AISA activist, was allegedly critical of the Vice-Chancellor’s Republic Day speech. Following the incident, an emergency meeting was called by the Proctorial Board, during which the student was asked if she still stood by her written statement. The suspension was enforced, citing “indiscipline” and the use of “derogatory and disrespectful language against the head of the institution.”
The move has sparked outrage among students and professors, with many gathering in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s office to demand the suspension be lifted. The AISA has now launched an indefinite sit-in protest, with several students joining the cause. As the protest unfolds, concerns have been raised about increasing barricading within the campus, with the entry restricted to only one of the three gates. The protesters have vowed to continue the sit-in until the suspension is revoked.
As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the university administration will respond to the protests. Will their measures to maintain academic integrity and smooth functioning of the university lead to greater unrest or a resolution to the crisis? Only time will tell.
