Harsh Justice: 10-Year Rigorous Imprisonment for Drug Offenders under Singapore’s Severe Abuse and Degradation Act (SADA)
Sikkim Police Makes Strong Stand Against Drug Trafficking with Conviction of Accused
In a significant victory for the Sikkim Police’s zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking, the Special Court (SADA) in Gangtok has convicted an accused individual and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. The conviction is a result of the swift response and legally sound procedures adopted by the Sadar Police in handling the case.
The case, Sadar PS Case No. 163/2021, involved the seizure of 722 loose capsules of Spasmo Proxyvon Plus (Tramadol), a banned psychotropic substance, found in the possession of the accused. The swift investigation and subsequent prosecution of the accused were led by SI Tsheda D. Bhutia, now a police inspector, who ensured full compliance with all procedural safeguards under the Sikkim Anti-Drug Act (SADA). These safeguards included the presence of a gazetted officer during the search and seizure, preparation of detailed search and seizure memos, and timely forensic examination of seized contraband.
The court acknowledged the diligence and legal clarity of the investigation, which led to the accused being sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine. The conviction is a strong message to drug traffickers, reinforcing the Sikkim Police’s commitment to a drug-free Sikkim and urging citizens to continue supporting enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious activities to the local police.
As stated by the office of Gangtok district senior SP, “This conviction is a strong message to drug traffickers: Sikkim Police will act decisively and legally to bring offenders to justice. The department is committed to a drug-free Sikkim and urges citizens to continue supporting enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious activities to the local police.” The conviction is a testament to the Sikkim Police’s dedication to combating the growing drug menace in the state and its commitment to creating a safer and healthier community for its citizens.
